Fashioning an Ethical Industry

FILM: INTRODUCING FASHIONING AN ETHICAL INDUSTRY

Fashion connects us to people across the world. Fashion students - the next generation of industry players - can have a role in transforming the industry so that in the future beautiful clothes are produced whilst respecting the rights of people and the planet.
This film introduces Fashioning an Ethical Industry and the work the project has been doing with fashion schools, colleges and universities to equip them with the tools and resources to teach their students about ethical issues.

Interesting Framework

This is taken from the NICE consumer project which is a project to inspire changes in that could lead to consumer behaviors towards more sustainable fashion consumption, covering the purchase, use, care for and disposal of fashion goods and accessories.

This framework has a possibility of being adapted towards my final project, on why there are barriers towards action, potential solutions and the ways to implement these proposed solutions in the project.

Vivienne Westwood collaborates with International Trade Center

Vivienne Westwood and the Ethical Fashion Programme

The collaboration started in 2010 with just three bags, produced in Nairobi and made from recycled roadside advertisement banners and redundant safari tents. The bags were hand crafted by marginalised communities of women such as single mothers, widows, HIV/AIDS victims and others living in extreme poverty. Designs, sent from London, required five key community groups to be trained in the use of the specialised equipment needed to achieve them.
The high quality of this order was possible thanks to the production and quality control of Ethical Fashion Africa (also known as the Hub). Three styles of bag, titled Get a Life, Gaia Heart and Quilted Orb were shipped on time and were shown on the Paris Catwalk. All were then sell-outs when they appeared in stores around the world and at e-tailer, Yoox, in February 2011.
This first collaboration provided full-time employment for 69 women living in the vast city slums of Kibera and Korogocho. In addition, because one of the three bags featured exquisite decorative detailing, part-time work and skill training for hundreds of other women to meet this challenge was a positive result.
Collaboration with Vivienne Westwood has expanded each season. All those involved from the beginning remain employed, meaning these artisans have been able to improve their living conditions substantially, pay for school fees, medical expenses and other needs.
The skills and enthusiasm of African craftswomen, the professionalism of those at the hub and the commitment of the Vivienne Westwood team sums up the Ethical Fashion Programme’s ethos; NOT CHARITY, JUST WORK.

Fashion Promotion: Article Critique

This is the first project assignment for fashion promotion. It is to act as a journalist critiquing a designer and stating the top trends for NYC fall fashion week 2012. The layout and writing had to be relevant to a publication which in this case is Harpers Bazaar.

Inspiration: The Fair Wear Formula

This is a great campaign video with a lovely concept, use of color, infographics and typography. These are all important things to consider during planning and execution of the video.

Brainstorm Research

Right now I am working on my M.A. Final project. I began with one topic and as research goes, it takes you to different avenues. I began with the Brazilian country campaign on branding Brazilian domestic products to attract foreign companies and wholesalers. Then I decided to tweak it and change it to Made in USA and lastly I decided to do a cause marketing campaign for the real "Slaves to Fashion." A campaign directed to shopping with a social conscience directed to tweens and teens. As of now I am gathering research and seeing where it will take me since I need to have a thesis statement pretty soon. Time is of the essence.

The aim of the campaign is to be conceptual and different. Something easy to understand yet thought-provoking. The creative part is definitely the most exciting and finding inspiration won't be an issue. The more research I do the more I find great campaigns on fashion social issues, I want mine to be different however and relate to the young high school audience.

The great thing about these links is that they inspire me to explore different avenues and narrowing down my project
